Avoid being victims of scammers

By Ayunie Inanie Arzmi

SERDANG, April 30 - The public need to be wiser to prevent themselves from being deceived and becoming victims of increasingly cunning fraud tactics of scammers, said Kuala Lumpur police chief, Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim.

Thus, he said that there is a need for awareness of fraud by scammers to be enhanced.

According to him, scammers used several tactics such as Love Scam, fraud online purchases, Macau Scam and loan that does not exist (PTW). "Many scammers use the Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) to steal telephone lines as used by the police to convince victims that the callers are indeed the police. We call this ‘spoofing’," he said in Share Your Story @ FEP "Beware of Scammer!" programme at the Philip Kotler Hall, Faculty of Economics and Management (FEP).

The programme, organised by FEP in collaboration with the FEP Alumni Action Committee, discussed the rampant online fraud cases these days.

The programme was also a platform for alumni to share knowledge and experience to motivate and inspire students and to further strengthen the relationship between the faculty and alumni.

Datuk Seri Mazlan, a UPM alumnus, attended the event with his wife who was also a UPM alumnus.

Datuk Seri Mazlan said scammers were very slick in deceiving their victims as they worked with people who were familiar and experienced with police and court matters.

He also said they were very careful with their plans and prepared convincing scripts to deceive their victims.

According to him, some victims did not contact the police despite having been cheated due to pride and to avoid embarrassment. – UPM
