UPM researcher?€?s liquid biofertiliser formulation wins ITEX 2023 Gold Medal

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) researcher, Dr. Ali Tan Kee Zuan produced an improved formulation of a liquid biofertiliser that won a gold medal at the International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition 2023 (ITEX).

Dr. Ali Tan is a lecturer in the Department of Land Management, Faculty of Agriculture, UPM produced a liquid biofertiliser that can reduce the rate of chemical fertilisers by up to 60%, and this biofertiliser can be produced in a short time, between 24 to 48 hours only.

The biofertiliser has been studied and is proven to accelerate the process of composting and decomposition of organic matter, producing high-quality organic fertiliser.

The study is the result of collaboration with industry partners. It has successfully increased the growth rate dan yield of crops through various mechanisms and can also speed up the process of composting and decomposition of organic matter.

In addition, the Malaysian Mahseer Hybrid research by Dr. Fadhil Syukri from the Faculty of Agriculture and the Standardized Paederia Foetida Extract: Potential Remedy for Type 2 Diabetes research by Dr. Nur Kartinee Kassim from the Faculty of Science also received the Gold Medal.

Meanwhile, the Ecosaria: Green Bioinsecticide research by Ts. Dr. Norhayu Asib from the Faculty of Agriculture, the Nucleic Acid-Based Lateral Flow Assay Strip (NALFA) for the Detection of Village Chickens research by Dr. Noordiana Nordin from the Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS) and the Porcine Rapid Amplification Kit research by Dr. Nur Fadhilah Khairil Mokhtar from the Halal Products Research Institute won silver medals.

Prof. Ir. Dr. Hj. Kamarul Arifin Ahmad, Director of Putra Science Park UPM said all the medals won were the outcome of the high commitment and dedication of researchers in developing the best innovation.

"UPM is extremely committed to producing and commercialising innovations that can benefit the country and welcomes collaboration from industry partners to market research results so that the benefits can be shared with all the targeted parties,” he said.

The organisation of ITEX 2023 has entered its 34th year and focuses more on encouraging and highlighting the ability of young researchers to explore creative and critical thinking skills at the Asian Young Inventors Exhibition (AYIE) dan Malaysian Young Inventors Exhibition (MYIE).

ITEX 2023 was organised from 11 to 12 May 2023 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) and this is a prestigious international design and innovation exhibition organised annually by the Malaysian Invention and Design Society (MINDS) and C.I.S. Network Sdn. Bhd. – UPM
