SERDANG, June 8 – Mogesh Sababathy, a PhD student in Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), is the only student from Malaysia who participated in the Stockholm+50 Youth Assembly and the Stockholm+50 International Meeting in Sweden recently.
As one of the environmental activists and member of the Official Youth Constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (YOUNGO), Mogesh said the meeting provided the opportunity for representatives of the young people to discuss environmental issues at a higher level.
"Throughout the meeting, I have prepared the Stockholm+50 Global Youth Policy Paper, a document that includes the wishes and demands of the young people to the world leaders to strengthen the policies in relation to environmental management and take quick actions to address the issue of climate change both nationally and globally.
"Among the key demands emphasised in this document include the need for efficient and fast actions to strengthen the environmental health improvement strategies, sustainable recovery from Covid-19, sustainable development and more inclusive decision-making processes," he said.

He added that the four-day meeting from May 31 to June 3 gave him a positive outlook when looking at the commitment and involvement of the youths throughout the programme.
In addition to broadening his horizons on environmental issues affecting other countries and regions, he had the opportunity to share and exchange views and opinions, especially on how to solve environmental problems, with the youth representatives.
"I am excited, moved and inspired to be with youth activists from around the world who have different brilliant ideas and are willing to be with world leaders in an effort to address climate change issues.
"The experience of being involved in this international meeting is an experience that I will never forget, especially when I had the opportunity to engage directly in the meeting as well as the discourse held with representatives from all around the world," he said.
Mogesh was sponsored by the United Nations Major Group for Children and Youth, an organisation that is officially given the mandate by the United Nations General Assembly to act as a bridge between the young people and the United Nations (UN) system.
He also hoped that his involvement would encourage more youths to participate in protecting the environment and climate change locally and abroad. - UPM
