UPM Maintains Research Excellence as Six Academics Recognised at National Level

By: Ameesya Aghniya Ab Rahim

KUALA LUMPUR, 13 November – Six distinguished researchers from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) have been named recipients of the Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) Award 2024/2025, marking yet another milestone in UPM’s longstanding leadership in national research and innovation.

The prestigious award, organised by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), honours outstanding Malaysian scientists for their impactful contributions to research, publications and knowledge advancement — reinforcing the nation’s commitment to a science, technology and innovation (STI)-driven economy.

The recognition ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Chang Lih Kang.

Among the honourees was UPM’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Ir. Ts. Abd. Rahim Abu Talib, who was recognised for his groundbreaking research in aerospace engineering.

“My research focuses on producing jet biofuel derived from palm oil extracts and agricultural waste such as rice husk,” he said.

“This work supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UPM’s Planetary Health initiative, while offering strong potential to advance the future of green aviation.”

Prof. Abd. Rahim also highlighted how the aviation sector can transition to sustainable energy without compromising safety or operational reliability.

“The shift to sustainable energy demands a balance between technological innovation, safety and system reliability. With robust government policies, industry collaboration and continuous research, the aviation sector can achieve greener operations without sacrificing efficiency,” he added.

The other UPM researchers recognised under the TRSM 2024/2025 recognition are:

  • Prof. Dr. Awis Qurni Sazili (Faculty of Agriculture)
  • Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Khairol Anuar Mohd Ariffin (Faculty of Engineering)
  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sarva Mangala Praveena (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences)
  • Prof. Ir. Dr. Siti Anom Ahmad (Faculty of Engineering)
  • Prof. Ir. Dr. Yus Aniza Yusof (Faculty of Engineering)

The awards reaffirm UPM’s strong presence in Malaysia’s research landscape and its role in driving national progress through scientific excellence.
