SERDANG, March 24: The national paralympic swimming coach, Victor Kung Chi Wai, unlocked a glorious achievement today when he obtained a Master of Education in Educational Psychology. He is determined to impart knowledge from his success to help the national para-swimming athletes improve their swimming performance.
“My next focus is to impart knowledge to swimming athletes… I want to convey to them the knowledge I learned in the hope that the swimmers under my guidance will be able to improve their performance further.
"I want to contribute to the nation’s swimming arena," said the youngest of the two siblings when meeting after receiving his master's degree, at Session 6 of the 45th Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Convocation Ceremony here today.
Victor Kung, 27, hails from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, represented the Sabah swimming team at the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) 2016 and coached the national para-swimming squad in 2018.
Among his students is Nur Syaiful Zulkifli, who won a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle (S5) event at the World Para Swimming Championships 2019 in London and qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
He said his focus now is to train four Malaysian para swimmers to face the three major tournaments this year, namely the Commonwealth Paraplegic Games in Edinburgh, Scotland; Asean Para Games in Surakarta, Indonesia; and the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.
He said with his job as a para-swimming coach, he needed to arrange his schedule neatly so that he could study at UPM simultaneously.
He said he was grateful to the National Sports Council (MSN) and the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (ASUM) (now named as Malaysia Swimming Federation) for giving him the opportunity and time to further his studies.
He also thanked Coach Eric who spotted his talent in the sport when he was 12 years old.
“Now I want to focus on coaching which is my first job… if there is an opportunity, I intend to further my studies to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level in sports science,” he said. - UPM
