SERDANG, Nov 16 - UPM Chancellor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, wants Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) graduates to celebrate their success in both academics and character development and also to cultivate the spirit of leadership within themselves.
His Majesty said that success should not only be celebrated in academics, but also for character development for oneself and also for the future generation to ensure a civil society.
HRH who is also the UPM Chancellor said that graduates should not forget history and always be prepared to defend the values and core institutions to preserve national harmony and unity.
Sultan Sharafuddin said that a quality education is the foundation for the country’s sustainable development.
“The role of the university is not only to prepare the youth and graduates to meet the demands of the job market, but also to equip graduates with the skills needed to produce individuals who are active, responsible, well-mannered, trustworthy and would uphold the standard of living.
“Graduates should always be prepared to defend the values and core institutions to preserve national harmony and unity”

“These graduates would bring blessing, peace and prosperity to mankind and nature and also finally ensure a sustainable future” he said during the 43rd Convocation Ceremony of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) at UPM’s Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Cultural and Arts Centre, here, today.
Sultan Sharafuddin is also pleased to present the Honorary Doctorate of Management to Tan Sri Anthony Francis Fernandes and Professor Emeritus to Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Nik Mustapha R. Abdullah and Datuk Dr. Mohd Sham Kasim.
In conjunction with the four-day convocation, as many as 6,015 graduates consisting of 632 recipients of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), the highest in UPM history, 1,554 Master’s Degree, 3,337 Bachelor’s Degree and 492 Diploma holders will receive their degrees and diplomas.
His Majesty also said that graduates should be grateful for the joys and priviledges that they possessed as a UPM graduate and has urged that they continue to fight battles to boost the dignity of their parents, family and country to a higher level with the knowledge that they had gained.
Consequently, HRH has also appealed the graduates to stay away from rude behaviours, especially during official ceremonies which would attract negative perceptions from society.
“Graduates should also respect the country’s constitution and laws highly to ensure that they are free from wrongdoings which could damage the reputation of their family, race and country,” he said - UPM
