ICAN 2019 Award Ceremony celebrates industry partners, community

SERDANG, April 25 - The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Office (Industry and Community Relations), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organised the High Impact Industry and Community Network Awards Ceremony (ICAN) 2019 to celebrate industry partners and communities working with UPM.

Deputy Director-General of Higher Education (IPTA), Ministry of Education, Prof. Dr. Mohd Cairul Iqbal Mohd Amin, officiated the opening ceremony.  He said that the event was able to motivate those involved as it showed that the work produced and the networking were highly valued.

At the event, ICAN awards were presented to Industry Partners, Community Partners, Responsibility Centres (PTJs), and UPM Staff and Students who have contributed outstandingly in activities under the Industry and Community Relations (JINM).

ICAN was first held in 2010, and this year it focuses on montages that have been broadcast to provide accurate facts apart from introducing industry partners to those present at the event.

For the industry category, Ooi Zhi Heng from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine received the Best Industry Network Project Award (student category).

 

The Best Industry Network Project Award (Academic Staff category) was received by Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Khatijah Mohd Yusoff, project leader of Enhancing the Therapeutic Potential of Raf Newcastle Disease Virus Cancer Vaccine; Assoc. Prof.  Dr. Rusmawati Said, head project of Human Capital Management Studies in Construction Industry in Malaysia; and Dr. Mohammad Jawaid, head project of the Safe Biodegradable Packaging (Safebiopack) project.The Best Industry Partner Award was awarded to Malaysia Genome Institute, Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), Malaysia and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

As for the community category, the Best Community Network Project Award (Academic Staff) was received by Dr. Susilawati Kasim, head project of a collaboration project with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah and Sabah Community; Dr. Zufarzaana Zulkeflee, head project of the Fishermen Community Empowerment Project for the Restoration and Maintenance of Freshwater Lake Ecosystems of Freshwater Fish at Kampung Makmur, Sungai Galah, Tanjung Tualang, Perak; and Prof. Dr. Vijayaletchumy Subramaniam, head project of the Dyslexic Knowledge Transformation Programme. The Best Community Partner Award was awarded to the Woman Bureau of Lepo’ Badeng, Sungai Koyan, Belaga, Kapit Division, Sarawak; Dato' Murad Pre-Release Prison Community, Ayer Keroh, Melaka; and Orang Asli students at full boarding schools throughout Peninsular Malaysia. The Best COR Category for institutes was awarded to the Bioscience Institute while for faculties, it was awarded to the Faculty of Modern Languages ?€??€?and Communication.

The JINM Showcase 2019 gold medal for Industrial Project was awarded to Dr. Mohammad Javiid, the project leader of the Safe Biodegradable Packaging (Safebiopack) Project; the silver medal was awarded to Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohd Hair Bejo, head project for Transforming Workforce Response to Infectious Disease Threats in Global Hotspots project; and the bronze medal was awarded to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rusmawati Said, head project of the Human Capital Management Studies in Construction Industry in Malaysia project.

The gold medal for Community Project was awarded to Izharuddin Shah Kamaruddin, head project of the Aquaponics Project of SMK Cyberjaya and Prof. Dr. Vijayaletchumy Subramaniam, head project of Upholding the Mastery of the Malay Language in the Spelling, Reading and Writing Aspects among Dyslexic Children.  The silver medals were awarded to Dr. Susilawati Kasim, head project of the Collaboration Project with Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sarva Mangala Praveena, the head project of the Rainwater Harvesting Project in Selected Schools in Melaka.

The bronze medals were awarded to Dr. Zurfarzaana Zulkeplee, head project of the Monitoring and Conservation Recommendations of Lake Ecosystem of Freshwater Fisherman, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Salmiaton Ali, head project of Waste Reduction of Fat, Oil and Grease from Pasar Besar Melaka food courts project. - UPM
