Educational visit to get to know homeless children

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 – Students of the Master of Education in Guidance and Counselling (Drug Prevention & Rehabilitation Education), Faculty of Educational Studies (FPP), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), took the initiative to conduct an educational visit to Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (SBJK), under the Community Based Learning (CBL) Programme.

The programme, led by Mohd Asmaneyadi Jamaludin and attended by 16 students, aimed at providing exposure to the master’s students to better recognise and to reach out to the homeless children around Kuala Lumpur who are receiving education at the school.

SBJK is the only school established under the Ministry of Education to house abandoned or homeless children to get proper right to education.

During the programme, the students were briefed by the school management on the history of the school establishment and management. Students expressed their admiration for the enthusiasm and sincerity of the teachers who worked hard to help abandoned children without asking for rewards.

In addition, group-based training (LDK) activities and competitions were held. Through the "My Hero" activity, the homeless children were made aware of the fact that they were truly accepted and loved by the outside community and the people around them.

Mohd Asmaneyadi said through the CBL organised activities, the students were thankful for the opportunity to connect with the various layers of society and the external community in reality.

"This is a valuable experience as such activities are able to produce graduates who have soft skills, have concerns for the community well-being, and contribute to produce better community members," he said.

Through the sharing of activities, the children's talents and potential can be uncovered as many of them are brave enough and ready to show their own abilities to tell and share experiences. - UPM.
