BiHSED seminar uplifts the status of Home Science Education

SERDANG, April 25 – The Biannual Home Science Education (BiHSED) Seminar 2019, which emphasises on the benchmarking of the field of Home Science Education in developing countries concerning sustainable development in Home Science Education (HSE), was held at the Faculty of Educational Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

The Dean of the Faculty of Educational Studies, Dr. Aida Suraya Md. Yunos, officiated the seminar and said that the programme was able to uplift teachers and pioneers in the field in terms of teaching as well as in career.

Besides the discussion on how HSE teachers can be better recognised in the field of education, Prof. Dr. Virginia B. Vincenti from the University of Wyoming compared the status of home science education teachers in the United States and Malaysia.

A lecturer from the Faculty of Food Science and Technology, UPM, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shahrim Abdul Karim, who is also a celebrity chef explained the conservation of heritage food among the millennial generation entitled “The Sustainability of Malaysia Heritage Foods among the Millennials”.

According to his research, three important factors that contributed to the shaping of heritage food today are from the influence of Melaka Empire, acculturation and assimilation from different ethnics, and also from the exchange of herbs and spices from foreign traders.

A poster presentation of teaching and product innovation and an exhibition of children clothing were held to increase the marketability of the subject of discussion at the international arena to achieve the objective of the programme which is to share the innovation results of teaching and products.

The work of the presenters who won the poster competition was displayed at the Block I foyer together with the exhibition of children clothing, the craftwork from the students who are taking the HSE subject.

A pedagogy workshop and forum entitled “Outcome-Based Education in HSE” was also held to enable the theories learnt in the seminar to be practised. - UPM
