By Nur Amalyna Azman

SERDANG, May 11 - More than 100 students and volunteers successfully organised the first Rewang Unity Programme initiated by Universiti Putra Malaysia Islamic Student Association (PMIUPM).

Among the activities carried out were doing things together (the practice of rewang) and distributing bubur lambuk to seventeen residential colleges at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) including UPM staff such as security guards and bus drivers.

The programme was to strengthen relationship and unity among multi-racial and religious university students, foster a closer rapport with UPM associations and nurture the culture of sharing sustenance and tolerance among university students.

PMIUPM’s inaugural programme received support from Student Representative Council, Ikatan Kristian, Sahabat Yadim, UPM Islamic Centre and Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam SeMalaysia.

The programme was carried out in the holy month of Ramadan so as to invoke all UPM citizens to intensify community practice in terms of sharing and giving alms as mandated by Islam.

The programme director, Nur Arif Haflan Hafizul Alif, said the programme was to make PMIUPM as a leader in championing solidarity among UPM associations, strengthening the relationship between UPM citizens and becoming a social channel that encouraged students to inculcate leadership, a sense of identity and concern towards each other.

Muhammad Haziq Yusanizan, a joint director, hoped the programme would continue for the next session and could involve many more unions.

According to PMIUPM president, Abdul Muiz Luqman Abd Latiff, PMIUPM was always ready to cooperate with any UPM associations and students of different races and religions for the benefit of UPM citizen as long as not in conflict with religious teachings. – UPM
