UPMCS and Worldwide Landfills collaborate to produce biochar from wood chips

SERDANG, Aug 6: UPM Consultancy & Services Sdn Bhd (UPMCS) and Worldwide Landfills Sdn Bhd (Worldwide Landfills) signed a Memorandum of Association (MoA) for a consultancy project of biochar production from wood chips.

Through the project, the existing waste (wood chips) at Worldwide Landfills will be used as raw materials for biochar production.

The wood chips supplied by Worldwide Landfills will be sent to Biorefinery Complex UPM for carbonisation process in which biochar is produced using UPM technology through a collaboration with Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan (Kyutech).

The Group Chief Executive Officer, UPM Holdings Sdn Bhd, Ir Khairul Faizi Khalid signed the MoA for UPMCS, while Worldwide Landfills was represented by Chief Operating Officer (Environment) Worldwide Holdings Bhd, Zamri Abdul Rahman.

The ceremony, held in Biomass Technology Laboratory, Biorefinery Complex UPM here, was witnessed by UPMCS Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Mohd Kamil Yusoff and Secretary of Worldwide Holdings Bhd., Kamil Suhaimi Baharin.

Also present were the UPM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dato' Dr. Aini Ideris, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Worldwide Holdings Bhd, Datin Paduka Norazlina Zakaria, Project Advisor and Head of Biorefinery Complex, Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences UPM, Prof. Dato' Dr Mohd Ali Hassan.

Prof. Datin Paduka Dato' Dr. Aini in her speech said that the goal of the project was to utilise waste that can create added-value products which can benefit the industry, people and environment.

Datin Paduka Norazlina also said that the collaboration with UPM would pave the way for Worldwide Landfills to continue to contribute towards environmental sustainability for the benefits and interests of future generation as well as for the development of the nation as a whole. - UPM
