SERDANG, Nov 15 - The Institute of Advanced Technology (ITMA), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has been rebranded as the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2) in line with the current developments as a prominent leader in research on nanoscience and nanotechnology.

UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Mohd Roslan Sulaiman, said the rebranding positively impacts researchers at ION2 to focus more on the set core areas.

"This restructuring is seen as to give a positive impact and to boost UPM's name as one of the main players in nanoscience and nanotechnology research to support the new core areas of ?€??€?ION2, namely Green Synthesis and Applications," he said.

Director of ION2, Prof. Dr. Mohd Nizar Hamidon, said the name change symbolises the institute's focus, which is more dynamic, and the transformation could further strengthen the multi-disciplinary fields implemented at the institute level in UPM.

"This rebranding is appropriate to increase the visibility of the core areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology, the visibility of research expertise in the core areas and research collaboration opportunities between local and international research in those fields," he added.

The rebranding ceremony aimed at promoting the name change of ITMA to ION2 to everyone, including UPM staff, students, alumni, industries and external shareholders, while creating networking and cooperation opportunities between the alumni, UPM staff and industries.

ITMA, one of the many research institutes in UPM, was established in November 1999.

It trains future research leaders and shares research results, expertise, and facilities with research and industry communities worldwide. - UPM
