SERDANG – The Faculty of Educational Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), had organised the Green Mind Inspiration Programme 2019 (IM-HIJAU2019) to address the issue of single-use plastic pollution in Malaysia and to raise awareness about the importance of reducing plastic use in everyday life.
The programme director, Dr. Nurzatulshima Kamaruddin, Senior Lecturer at FES, said the programme was held in conjunction with the National Environment Day 2019 at FES UPM. With the theme of “Avoiding Single-use Plastics”, the programme is part of the government's long-term plan to address the issue of single-use plastic waste in Malaysia.
“A number of activities that aimed at overcoming plastic waste disposal were shared apart from green living activities that were based on the idea of plastic recycling.
"The knowledge and skills shared are in line with the government's goal in raising awareness on the importance of green sustainability in life and at the work environment," she said.
IM-HIJAU2019 was officiated by the Deputy Secretary General (Environment and Climate Change), Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC), Dr. Nagulendran Kangayatkarasu.
Dr. Nurzatulshima added that their effort aligns with UPM's 32nd place on green campus sustainability and environmental management in the UI-Greenmetric World University Ranking 2018.
She said the programme could positively open the minds of new generation in addressing the issue of global warming and thus maintaining survival. - UPM
