SERDANG, Sept 24 – Materials Synthesis and Characterization Laboratory (MSCL), Institute of Advanced Technology (ITMA) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) had organised the Knowledge Transfer Programme: Empowering Science and Technology of STPM Science Stream Students of SMK Batu 8, Puchong (SMKBP).
It involved 32 students and four accompanying teachers of the school. The programme focused on four core subjects of the Science stream namely Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology and was conducted by lecturers and facilitators from ITMA, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Engineering.
It was officiated by the Director of ITMA, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Nizar Hamidon, followed by an exchange of certificates ceremony between ITMA and SMKBP.
A motivational session titled “Expressive Art Therapy: My Future Self Portrait” was conducted by an expert from the Registry Office, followed by a lecture on Mathematics, titled, “Mathematics: What’s Next?”
In the afternoon session at the Faculty of Science Students, students conducted further experiments on the subjects of Chemistry, Physics and Biology on their own. Among the activities carried out were “Magnetic Slime”, "Fun with Light", "High Temperature Superconductor System", "Zebrafish: Exploring Embryogenesis", "Baby Cow Beauty Journey & Chicken Egg: How Good is Good", "Rainbow Within" and "Stress and Chlorophyll in Different Plants".
Apart from conducting experiments, students were also taken for a tour around the laboratory and were exposed to the post-graduate student atmosphere.
Among the experts involved in the programme were Siti Fatimah Abdul Ghani, Dr. Chen Chuei Yee, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Janet Lim Hong Ngee, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thahira Begum, Dr. Zuraidah Zan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suriati Paiman, Dr. Mohd Mustafa Awang Kechik, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Raba’ah Syahidah Azis, Dr. Wan Norhamidah Wan Ibrahim, Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir, Dr. Bokhary Zainal and Dr. Mohd Hafiz Ibrahim.
The closing event was held at Bilik Saintis Gemilang, Faculty of Science, UPM. The closing speeches were given by the programme director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Janet Lim Hong Ngee and the accompanying teachers’ representative, Yu Guk Ting. – UPM
